The NHL Trading Deadline

The NHL Trading Deadline came and went yesterday, and the Bruins did not do what we all expected. Defenseman Derek Morris was traded yesterday to the Coyotes for a 2011 4th round draft pick, that move was to clear up some salary cap space. Then the Bruins went out and acquired defenseman Dennis Seidnberg from the Panthers, the Bruins had to give up Byron Bitz, Craig Weller, and a second round draft pick. I think Seidnberg is an upgrade over Morris, but they might have given up a little to much to get him. Surprisingly that was all Peter Chiarelli did yesterday afternoon, before the trading deadline.

The Bruins biggest problem this year has been scoring goal, they are last in the league in scoring. So coming into the deadline yesterday everybody thought they would make a move to get a winger to play along side of Marc Savard, but they surprised everybody and didn't do that. What that told me is that the Bruins front office is already looking towards next year. The front office thinks that if they want to make a big run in the playoffs, they need to add a lot more than what was out on the market yesterday. They want to hold on to most of these picks, so they can get some good young talent, and prospects in the future. If that is true that's disappointing, especially since coming into this season the team, and the fans had much bigger expectations.

Its looking like the Bruins will have the number two pick in the draft next year, with Toronto's pick they got in the Phil Kessel trade, and the top three players in the draft are suppose to be special players. So if the Bruins can get one of those players, and make some good free agent signings, and maybe make some trades, next year could be the year the Bruins year to make a big playoff run, like we have been waiting for.
